Our History
Atherton Hobler, a founder of Benton & Bowles Advertising Agency in New York, bought 200 acres of Skillman Farm in Montgomery Township, New Jersey, in 1941, moving his herd of 60 cattle from Connecticut. As his herd grew to 150, he acquired an additional 400 acres. Hobler retired in 1968 and sold his champion cattle, retaining ownership of the property but leasing it to other farmers.
In 1971, William Augustine, President of The Great Road Land Company and Bedens Brook Company, purchased 50 acres from Paul Tulane, eventually merging it with Hobler's 600 acres. The companies aimed to develop the land with a golf course and country club as the centerpiece. Initially named Cherry Glen Country Club, it was later called Cherry Valley Country Club (CVCC).
Golf Course Development
In the early 1980s, Rees Jones designed the golf course. The key to obtaining municipal approval was the donation of 50 acres for the Atherton Hobler Memorial Park. In 1989, DKM Properties bought the land, with Mr. Augustine as founding VP. The golf course officially opened in 1991, with Rees Jones and Mr. Augustine honored during the ceremony.
The Board of Directors has named the two main buildings Woodacres and Hobler House to honor our history and remind members of our past as we create future memories at Cherry Valley Country Club.
